“When I left my apprenticeship at the end I felt like a brand new person. It’s helped me a lot coming to the army with confidence and being able to speak to people easier and make friends here.”
Gary
Gary, a care leaver, met with his Throughcare and Aftercare support worker to discuss Modern Apprenticeships (MA). With a keen interest in sports, especially football, his support worker helped him with an initial application for a MA for an Assistant Outdoor Education Worker.
Gary was unsuccessful but continued to work with his support worker and using the positive feedback from his interview worked on his interview skills, he also took up the offer of volunteering for the employer to increase his skills and experience.
Gary then applied for a MA with Leisure & Culture with the Sports Development Team specialising in football – the perfect fit! Gary was successful and completed his MA gaining SVQ3 in Leisure Management plus other industry recognised qualifications.
Still engaging with his support worker Gary expressed an interest in joining the armed forces or police and a session with these agencies was arranged to allow Gary and others to find out more about applying and working with them.
Following his apprenticeship, Gary started sessional work with Leisure and Culture Dundee and was supported to join the Army training programme. He has continued to keep in touch with his Support Worker and Mentor and just look at him now!
Gary’s next commission is 7 months on ceremonial duties at Buckingham Palace.
